When outlet covers must meet code

Before you buy: measure your box depth
This is the step most people skip, and it’s why new covers sometimes won’t sit flush against the wall. I learned this the hard way when I bought six brushed-nickel covers online and three wouldn’t close because the outlet boxes were set deeper than standard.
How to measure:
- Remove your current cover by unscrewing the two mounting screws. You don’t need to turn off the breaker for this — the cover is not electrically live.

- Most modern outlets sit about 0.5 inches behind the wall surface. Older installations sometimes sit flush or project slightly forward.

Step 1: Remove the old cover
Unscrew the two mounting screws (some covers have three). Store them in a small container if you’re a renter or plan to restore the original look later — more on that below.
Pull the old cover straight toward you. Don’t pry or twist; that can crack the drywall or damage the outlet body.
Step 2: Check for stripped screw holes
If the screw spins freely when you try to remove it, or if it fell out on its own, the screw hole in the outlet or switch body is worn out. This is extremely common on outlets older than 10 years.
Quick fix (works for 2–5 years):
Break a wooden toothpick in half, insert it into the stripped hole until it’s flush with the outlet surface, and snap off any excess. The wood fibers will grip the screw threads when you install the new cover. I’ve used this fix in three rentals and it’s still holding.
Longer-term fix:

Step 3: Install the new cover
Align the screw holes on the new cover with the holes on the outlet or switch body. Insert both screws loosely — hand-tight only.
Check alignment before you tighten: the cover should sit flat against the wall with no rocking or gaps. If it rocks, one screw may be cross-threaded; back it out and try again.
Tighten screws firmly but not aggressively. About a quarter-turn past snug is right. Over-tightening cracks plastic covers and can strip the screw holes further.
If the new cover won’t sit flush:
- The outlet may be set deeper than the cover’s tolerance. Measure again and buy an adjustable cover.
- The outlet or switch body may project slightly forward from the wall (common in 1970s construction). Some adjustable covers have tabs you can snap off to accommodate this.

Verify it worked
Inspect the cover for gaps larger than 1/16 inch or any rocking when you press on it. A tiny gap is cosmetic and won’t affect safety, but a large gap usually means a fitment mismatch.

A note for renters: store the originals
Most leases allow you to replace outlet and switch covers without landlord permission — they’re cosmetic fixtures, not structural or electrical alterations. But to protect your deposit, keep the original covers and screws in a labeled bag. I’ve done this in four rentals and restored everything before move-out with zero pushback.

Troubleshooting
The new cover won’t close — there’s a gap at the top or bottom. The outlet is set deeper than the cover’s tolerance, or the outlet box is slightly tilted. Measure the setback and buy an adjustable cover, or use washers behind the outlet body to bring it forward (that requires removing the outlet, so see how to replace an outlet).
The screws won’t tighten — they spin freely. The screw holes are stripped. Use the toothpick fix or nylon inserts described in Step 2.
The switch lever binds when I flip it. The cover opening is too small for your switch type, or the cover is slightly misaligned. Loosen both screws, shift the cover up or down slightly, and re-tighten. If it still binds, the cover is the wrong model for that switch.
The cover fits but there’s a visible gap around a GFCI outlet’s test/reset buttons. You bought a standard cover for a GFCI outlet. GFCI outlets need GFCI-specific covers with cutouts for the buttons — standard covers don’t accommodate the protrusion.
If you’re replacing multiple covers in one room, do the outlet covers first — they’re more forgiving on fitment — then tackle the switch plates once you’ve confirmed your technique. And if an outlet shows any of the wear indicators above (discoloration, loose grip, warmth), replace the outlet itself before you cover it.
