Measure before you buy—and confirm your mounting system

Then measure from the center of the hinge bolt holes to the front edge of the bowl: round bowls measure about 16.5 inches, elongated bowls measure 18 to 18.5 inches.

Soft-close dampers: how they fail and why it matters for budgeting

Soft-close mechanisms use small hydraulic cylinders inside the hinge assembly. When you release the lid, hydraulic fluid flows through a restricted valve, slowing the descent to about 3 to 5 seconds instead of slamming. Over time, the seals wear out, the fluid leaks, or the internal components degrade. When that happens, the damper fails open—meaning the lid drops fast or slams shut again, exactly like a cheap seat without dampers.

These cannot be field-repaired. The dampers are sealed units, and manufacturers do not sell replacement cartridges for consumer seats. When the soft-close stops working, you replace the entire seat. Most dampers fail around year 6 or 7 depending on household size and usage frequency, so factor that into the cost decision. Step 1: Remove the old seat

Lift the plastic caps at the back of the seat to expose the bolts. Most caps snap open or hinge upward. If they’re painted over, slide a flathead screwdriver underneath and lever gently.

Hold the nut underneath the bowl with the wrench while you turn the bolt from the top with the screwdriver. If the nut spins freely without loosening, the bolt is corroded to the nut—spray penetrating oil on both sides, wait 10 minutes, and try again.

If the bolt still won’t budge after oil and waiting, cut it. Use a hacksaw with the blade angled between the underside of the bowl and the nut, or use an oscillating multi-tool with a metal-cutting blade. Cut slowly to avoid scratching the porcelain. Step 2: Clean the hinge area

Do not crank the nuts down hard. Porcelain is brittle, and overtightening the bolts is the most common way people crack the bolt holes. The seat should not wiggle side to side, but it also should not feel like it’s bolted to a steel flange. Snug is enough.

Before you snap the hinge caps closed, coat the exposed threads of the new bolts with a thin layer of plumber’s grease. It takes 10 seconds and makes the next removal much easier. Step 4: Adjust soft-close dampers (if applicable)

If you installed a soft-close seat, test the dampers before you close the hinge caps. Lift the lid to 80 degrees and release it—it should descend slowly and touch down in about 3 to 5 seconds. If it drops fast or slams, the dampers are either not engaged or are defective.

Most soft-close mechanisms have a small adjustment screw inside the hinge assembly. Turn it clockwise to slow the descent, counterclockwise to speed it up. Some seats require you to remove the hinge cap to access the screw; others have an external thumbwheel. Check the manufacturer’s instructions.

If the dampers don’t work at all—no resistance, lid drops at full speed—and you’ve confirmed the adjustment screws are set correctly, the dampers are defective. Return the seat and get a replacement. Do not try to repair or modify the hydraulic mechanism yourself; sealed units are not user-serviceable.

Verify it worked

Sit on the seat and shift your weight side to side. It should not slide, rock, or creak. If it does, tighten the bolts another eighth-turn and test again.

Lift and close the lid several times. It should stay up when raised and should not drift closed on its own. If the lid won’t stay vertical, the hinge tension is too loose or the seat is incompatible with the bowl angle—this is more common on older round bowls with steeply sloped backs.

Troubleshooting

Problem: The seat slides forward when you sit on it
The bolts are not tight enough, or the rubber bumpers on the underside of the seat are worn or missing. Tighten the nuts another quarter-turn. If that doesn’t fix it, remove the seat and check that the rubber bumpers (the small pads near the front that keep the seat from sliding) are intact and positioned correctly.

Problem: The lid won’t stay up
The hinge is too loose or the seat is not compatible with the bowl. Some seats have adjustable hinge tension—check the manual. If the seat is non-adjustable and won’t stay vertical, return it and get a model designed for your bowl shape.

Problem: The bolts are too long and hit the underside of the tank
This happens on close-coupled toilets (where the tank bolts directly to the bowl with no gap). Cut the bolts to length with a hacksaw or use the shorter bolt set that some manufacturers include for close-coupled installations.

Problem: The soft-close stopped working after a few years
The hydraulic dampers have worn out. You cannot repair them—replace the entire seat. This is normal wear for dampers that see daily use; most fail between year 5 and year 7.

When to call a professional

You don’t need a plumber to replace a toilet seat, but call one if:

  • The bolt holes in the bowl are cracked and won’t hold bolts securely
  • The bowl itself is cracked (you’ll see a hairline fracture, usually running from the bolt hole toward the rim)

Cracked porcelain does not get better. If you see a crack anywhere on the bowl or tank, plan to replace the toilet soon—it will leak or break entirely at some point.

What you should know before you buy

Round vs. elongated: If you don’t have a tape measure, round bowls look noticeably shorter from above and are more common in older homes and small bathrooms. Seats are not interchangeable—an elongated seat on a round bowl overhangs by two inches and looks wrong; a round seat on an elongated bowl leaves a gap at the front.

Soft-close vs. standard: Soft-close dampers prevent lid-slamming, which is the main cause of cracked lids and hinges. If you have kids, they’re worth the extra $50 to $80. If you live alone and close the lid gently anyway, a standard seat will last just as long and costs half as much. Bidet seats require a water connection: Bidet seats bolt on the same way, but you’ll also need to turn off the water at the shutoff valve, disconnect the tank fill line, install a T-adapter, and connect the bidet hose.
